Guwahati, Oct 7: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has uncovered a major financial transaction of about ₹1 crore in the bank accounts of his two personal security officers (PSOs). The development comes as investigators continue to question one of the eight individuals who were present on the yacht in Singapore at the time of Zubeen’s death.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government has urged the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department to investigate the financial aspects of the case.“The state government has requested the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax department to look into the financial angle in the Zubeen Garg death case. I hope the central agencies will take cognisance of it,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.
The SIT, which has already arrested Shyamkanu Mahanta (organiser of the North East India Festival), Siddharth Sharma (Zubeen’s manager), Shekhar Jyoti Goswami (drummer), and Amritprabha Mahanta (co-singer), continued questioning several persons connected to the case.
Sarma said efforts are being made to ensure that all individuals who were in Singapore at the time of Zubeen’s death cooperate with the investigation.
“I am confident that everyone from Singapore involved will join the investigation soon. Our main goal is to determine exactly what happened to Zubeen Garg and how he passed away. Some individuals have claimed that Singapore police are preventing them from travelling to India or that their jobs would be at stake if they come for questioning,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that while the process may take time, the state government is “gradually motivating” them to cooperate with investigators.
Referring to an FIR filed against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sarma clarified that the minister had no connection with Zubeen Garg.
“Jyotiraditya Scindia neither knew Zubeen personally nor visited Singapore. Yet, an FIR has been filed against him. Some elements are trying to disturb the situation,” Sarma alleged.
The Chief Minister also cautioned against attempts to politicize Zubeen’s death, saying two distinct groups have emerged — one of genuine fans seeking justice, and another trying to exploit the tragedy for political mileage.
“Some people who had never even listened to Zubeen Garg’s songs have suddenly become his fans. One of them even suggested that Garima Garg should contest from the Jalukbari constituency,” he added.
