Opposition INDIA team arrives in Manipur to assess ethnic violence

Imphal, July 29: A 20-member parliamentary delegation from opposition INDIA arrived in Imphal on Saturday to assess the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. The Meitei-Kuki conflict has caused the loss of over 160 lives and left more than 600 injured.

The delegation, representing 16 parties, is scheduled to visit both valley and hill districts of Manipur to engage with affected communities before departing for Delhi on Sunday.

Sushmita Dev, Rajya Sabha member of Trinamool Congress and a member of the parliamentary team, mentioned their intention to meet with Governor Anusuiya Uikey during their visit but will skip meeting Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The delegation will be visiting Churachandpur and other affected areas of Manipur.

She further criticized the BJP and its governments, holding them accountable for the crisis and loss of lives in Manipur, adding, “The BJP is a lost face, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a lost face.”

The Congress and other opposition parties are demanding the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur and discussions in the Parliament under relevant rules, 184 and 267 in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively.

The 20-member delegation comprises MPs from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and others.

In June, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Ajoy Kumar, who oversees several northeastern states, visited Manipur.
