Shillong, Feb 17: In a major setback for the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Ri Bhoi District, over 100 UDP supporters, including top leaders, resigned from the party and decided to support Macdalyne S. Mawlong, the MDC of Umsning Constituency for the upcoming state legislative assembly election in 2023 from Nongpoh Constituency.
Umsning MDC, Macdalyne S. Mawlong, has not openly declared from which party she will be contesting, but she will be likely to contest from the National People’s Party (NPP), as per the reliable sources.
The UDP leaders and supporters from Ri Bhoi had on Thursday declared that they have resigned from the UDP in the meeting held at Iewmawlong Dorbar Hall, Nongpoh and announced their support for Mawlong.
The top leaders of UDP Ri Bhoi District who tendered their resignation include the General Secretary of UDP Ri Bhoi, Lawrence Nongrum, Vice President UDP Ri Bhoi and chief organizer of State UDP Youth Wing, Rayonald Kharkamni, UDP Ri Bhoi Youth Wing President, Sumarlang Swer, Joint Secretary of UDP District Youth Wing, Phis Narlong and other 120 party workers and supporters of UDP from Nongpoh Constituency.
As stated by the top leaders who resigned from the UDP Party, the main reason behind their exodus is their unwillingness to work for the party which has no future and for the last several years the UDP party had failed to produce MLAs and MDCs from Ri Bhoi District.
