Pala demands appointment of VC for NEHU

Must read

Shillong, June 6: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong’s ranking among the universities in India has taken a nosedive with the University placed at 49 in the 2020 NIRF report, and reason is its poor administrative performance. Citing this report and the gradual fall of the university at other parameters and evaluation reports over the years, Congress MP from Shillong, Vincent H Pala has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for immediate appointment of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) for the University.

“In the interests of the thousands of students I humbly request you to kindly make a personal intervention and appoint a new VC at the earliest possible without any further delay,” Pala said in his letter to the PM on Saturday.

On the NIRF 2020 ranking of NEHU at 49, he said it is a 10 place fall from the previous year. NAAC report of 2017 had also mentioned poor quality administration and leadership as one of the most important reasons for the University’s fall in ranking.

He said for the last five years, the administrative performance of the university has remained poor, and the rankings reflect on the perception factor of NEHU.

The MP added that he had already written a letter to the Union Education Minister on the matter but action is yet to be taken.

He said in the meantime the sorry state of affairs of the University continues to fall downwards adding “The ranking of the university has continued to scale down from year to year.”

He further informed that the vacant teaching posts in various departments have remained vacant till date adding that in the non-filling of the vacant teaching positions, the students are at the receiving end.
