Pala slams govt for inability to resolve waste disposal woes of Jowai town

Shillong, April 25: Meghalaya Congress chief and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala on Monday slammed the state government for ‘lack of leadership’ to resolve the garbage imbroglio of Jowai town.

“There is a serious problem in the leadership and there also must be corruption in between because they could not identify the land (for setting up of the landfill),” Pala told reporters.

He said it is sad to see Jowai being a centre of business and trade and a district headquarter, having to go through such experience.

On people not willing to give land for such projects, the Congress leader said this is a sign that the people are trying to revolt against the government.

“They (govt) are trying to shift all these problems from Jowai to areas be it in Sutnga Elaka, be it in areas in Amlarem. So I think the trust of the public in the government is not there, it is becoming rather like revenge by the public to the government. This is a sign that people are trying to revolt against the government,” he added.

He, however, said it is the duty of the government of the day especially the Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla along with the district administration to address the problem immediately.

When asked, Pala said it is very easy to resolve the issue as he suggested the need to use technology besides identifying a land and working together with the locals of the area.

“In Garo Hills, they are going to install. So why not install in Jowai also. There are different technologies which you can convert waste into energy, where you can convert waste into charcoal. There are different technologies which they can use,” he said. “If there is no problem in Shillong, no problem in other parts of the state why the problem is only in Jowai,” Pala further added.
