Guwahati, June 28: Ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli in Assam were suspended after a ferry carrying passengers was stranded on the Brahmaputra River due to a massive herd of nearly 150 elephants passing through the route.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 150 elephants, including calves, were seen moving along the riverbanks and even near anchored ferries, forcing operators to halt their journeys mid-river for safety.
On Friday morning, the elephants returned to the river’s edge, causing further delays and concern among commuters. Some ferries remained stuck midstream as both operators and passengers waited for the herd to disperse.
Local residents and ferry users have called on the Majuli district administration and the forest department to take swift action to clear the ferry route.
The ferry service between Assam’s Nimatighat in Jorhat and Kamalabari Ghat in Majuli is a crucial transport lifeline for locals.
“A large group of elephants suddenly appeared in the river when we were en route from Kamalabari to Nimatighat. We were afraid to encounter them. Some elephants moved towards Majuli, while others wandered toward the chaporis (sandbars). The ferry operators stopped the ferry,” said a passenger.
He added, “We urge the forest department to take immediate steps to drive the elephants away and increase surveillance in the area.”
