Shillong, July 28: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Friday said that the home department should crack down on the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) for its attempt to brand Meghalaya as an ‘unfriendly’ state.
“I believe that the home department should crack down on such groups like this LRO,” Lyngdoh told reporters.
“I am very clear that these groups have a very sinister agenda. The agenda means to brand Meghalaya as unfriendly and therefore to sort of discourage people from travelling to Meghalaya,” he said.
Stating that the tourist inflow in Meghalaya has almost reached 15 lakhs per year, Lyngdoh said, “Seeing is believing and when these visitors come and they find that people here are friendly, cooperative and welcoming, the perception changes.”
The minister further informed that he had instructed the department through the tourism website to declare that “Meghalaya is not just safe but it is the ultimate tourist destination of the country”.
On Wednesday, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) had lodged a first information report (FIR) against the LRO for trying to incite religious and communal tension between different communities in the state.
This came after the LRO had uploaded a video on the July 24-incident where a shopkeeper and her son were assaulted and robbed by miscreants and alleging in its tweets that the KSU were the ones attacking devotees, priest and women in Mahadev Khola temple and that the attack was instigated by the Presbyterian Church.
