Shillong, July 15: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has welcomed Meghalaya government’s decision to institute an independent inquiry committee headed by a retired judge to probe allegations of scams in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

“The inquiry will start now… so we will wait and see what the outcome is and based on that we will sit down and decide,” PDF president and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh told reporters on Thursday.

At the same time, he said the call to remove incumbent Power Minister, James K Sangma from his portfolio pending the inquiry is the prerogative of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, and they will leave the decision on the matter to his wisdom.

“That (removal of the power minister) is the prerogative of the Chief Minister,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh, who is holding charge of Agriculture and Sports, however informed that the party had discussed the issue related to the alleged corruption in the MeECL with the Chief Minister.

“We are coalition partners of the MDA government and whenever there is anything…we directly discuss with the CM and he always listens,” he said.

On the Congress’ demand for a CBI inquiry into the alleged scam in the implementation of the Saubhagya scheme in the state, the PDF leader however said Congress is just playing its role as an opposition which is part of politics.

“If we are in the opposition, definitely we will also do the same,” he added.
