Shillong, Oct 10: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has expressed deep concern over the law and order situation in Meghalaya, particularly in light of the recent deaths of two minor children.
According to him, there is a need for a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding lawlessness and criminal activities in the state.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, Sangma has stressed the importance of addressing petty crimes, which he believes can escalate into larger criminal activities.
He pointed out that incidents of theft, cattle lifting, and other criminal activities are becoming increasingly common in rural areas, often involving organized groups.
He revealed that he had spoken to a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) who flagged the issue of manpower deficiency, which hampers the police’s ability to effectively deal with crime.
He also questioned the government’s commitment to implementing the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act, which was designed to empower local institutions and communities to work together to address safety and security challenges.
He pointed out that the Act’s provisions, such as installing CCTVs in critical areas, have not been fully implemented.
Sangma expressed concern over the vacancies in police stations and battalions, which he believes is a deliberate attempt to cripple the police organization.
“We are talking about not filling up the vacancies, vacancies against those vacancies which have resulted due to retirement promotion against the sanction and permanent post. So where is this salary going? What are they doing with the salary component? So withholding this money for something else thereby depriving the state from getting the benefit of the services of these men and women who have been in the organisation well trained. Today, after recruitment, you will require one year of their pre-induction training, it is not that you immediately induct and then you immediately deploy it,” he added.
