Guwahati, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased the cultural and agricultural heritage of Northeast India through a series of traditional gifts presented during high-level diplomatic engagements, including Assam’s Eri silk, Joha rice, and a Shirui Lily-inspired stole from Manipur.
During his interaction with the Prime Minister of Italy, Modi presented an Eri silk stole from Assam and a Shirui Lily-inspired silk stole from Manipur, highlighting the region’s rich handloom traditions and indigenous craftsmanship.

The Eri silk, also known as peace silk, unique to Assam, is obtained in cruelty free manner and represents the State’s finest weaving traditions.
The Shirui Lily silk stole draws inspiration from the rare Shirui Lily flower found only on the Shirui Kashong Peak in Manipur. Revered by the Tangkhul Naga community, the flower symbolises purity, identity, and cultural pride.
In another gesture highlighting Assam’s agricultural legacy, the Prime Minister also gifted a sample of Joha rice to Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Joha rice is a unique small-grain aromatic rice variety indigenous to Assam, known for its rich fragrance and distinctive flavour. Considered a premium traditional rice variety of the state, Joha rice holds cultural as well as culinary significance in Assamese households.
The gifts were seen as part of India’s broader effort to promote the unique cultural, textile, and agricultural heritage of the Northeast at the international level.
