Guwahati, May 12: Assam Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma’s second-term swearing-in ceremony is set to become a major political show of strength, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, chief ministers and international dignitaries arriving in Guwahati for the high-profile event.
The ceremony at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara today is expected to witness one of the biggest gatherings of political heavyweights in Assam in recent years, underlining both the BJP’s dominance in the Northeast and Sarma’s growing stature within the NDA.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and several top BJP leaders are attending the event. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has also arrived in Guwahati for the swearing-in ceremony.
Ahead of the ceremony, Sarma on Monday announced that four senior leaders — Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog — will take oath as ministers alongside him in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Taking to X, Sarma wrote: “Happy to announce that the following four colleagues of mine will take oath as Ministers tomorrow, along with me in the august presence of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji.”
Sarma also announced that BJP MLA Ranjit Das will be the NDA candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
“I am also happy to share that Shri Ranjit Das, Hon’ble MLA, will be our candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. My heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all of them. Together, we will continue to work with full dedication for a stronger, more developed and prosperous Assam,” he stated.
The massive political turnout follows the NDA’s emphatic victory in the Assam Assembly elections, where the alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone crossed the majority mark with 82 seats for the first time in the state’s history.
Political observers see the grand swearing-in ceremony not merely as a formal assumption of office, but also as a clear signal of the BJP leadership’s confidence in Sarma’s leadership and Assam’s growing strategic importance in national politics.
