SHILLONG, Sept 9: Activists from different pressure groups and residents of Mawlai under the banner of the Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (KSKBUH) on Friday staged a protest against the alleged failure of the government to take action against the police involved in the killing of former HNLC leader (L) Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.

This was after the report of the One Man Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice T. Vaiphei was tabled on the first day of the Assembly’s autumn session.

The protesters were also prevented by the security personnel from taking out a protest march to Assembly premises.

Leader of the KSKBUH Donboklang Kharlyngdoh told reporters that they totally reject the report of the Commission of Inquiry. “We have decided not to accept the report as the names of the police officials involved in the killing of (L) Thangkhiew have been omitted despite the assurance of the deputy chief minister that not a single coma will be missed from the report,” he said.

Kharlyngdoh, who is also leader of the HYC, further informed that the group strongly opposes the government’s decision to call the police officials who are part of the Tactical Team-1 for explanation.

“We totally are against the CM’s decision to call them for an explanation. We feel that since the government knows who are those police officials involved in the killing of (L) Thangkhiew, it should immediately take action against them but this is not happening,” he said.

He further slammed the government by saying, “Activists are getting arrested just because they check the entry of illegal outsiders in the state but the government is hesitant to take action when it comes to police officials.”

The KSKBUH also requested the 36 MLAs from Khasi-Jaintia Hills region to raise their voice against this injustice during the current session.

“We also want to send this message to the HNLC leaders who are coming for the peace talks to be alert and careful while engaging with the MDA government,” Kharlyngdoh said.

When asked, the HYC leader said that the group will soon decide on their future course of action against the failure of the MDA government to ensure justice is delivered in this case.
