Dibrugarh, Sept 9: Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam, under preventive detention, cast his vote today in the 2025 vice-presidential election.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) had directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Assam Chief Secretary to facilitate Singh’s voting rights. Under Rule 26 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, a postal ballot was issued to the jailed MP, allowing him to exercise his franchise despite being in detention.
According to sources, jail authorities handed Singh the ballot paper along with other required materials. After casting his vote, he returned the sealed envelope to officials, who dispatched it to Delhi via a special messenger by air.
The ECI has instructed that the marked ballot must reach the Returning Officer before counting begins at 6 pm today.
This year’s vice-presidential contest pits NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan against the Opposition’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge Sudershan Reddy.
