Ri Bhoi DC clarifies on closure of illegal KHADC checkgate at Umdihar, says Council violated its own order

Must read

Nongpoh, May 21: A day after Executive Members (EMs) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) accused the Ri Bhoi District Administration of disrespecting the Council by shutting down the KHADC check gate at Umdihar, the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District, Abhilash Baranwal, on Wednesday clarified that the closure of the gate was not due to any disregard for the KHADC. Instead, he stated, the action was taken in accordance with legal provisions.

To recall, two KHADC Executive Members – Powell Sohkhlet, EM in-charge of Land, Development, and Information & Technology, and Winston Tony Lyngdoh, EM in-charge of Trade, Enforcement, Labour Clearance Certificate, and Revenue Collection – had told the media that the District Administration had shown disrespect towards KHADC by forcefully locking the check gate.

However, the Deputy Commissioner clarified that there was no intention to undermine the KHADC, which is empowered under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He emphasized that the closure of the check gate was done strictly as per the law.

Baranwal stated that the action was in compliance with government directives.

He further pointed out that even in the KHADC’s own terms and conditions for setting up of check gates, under point 6, it is clearly mentioned that check gates cannot be erected along the National Highway.
