Nongpoh, Aug 20: The Nongpoh Police on the night of August 19 arrested five members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on allegations of extorting money from tourist taxi drivers.
The group reportedly claimed they were conducting checks on non-tribal passengers but allegedly demanded money from local tourist taxi drivers ferrying people from outside the state.

Those arrested have been identified as prominent leaders of the organisation: Donboklang Kum, President of HNYM Nongpoh Circle, Sparly Syngkli, Chairman of the Anti-Influx Cell, Aiborlang Marbaniang, Working President of Nongpoh Circle along with members Krius Pariong and Ricky Tangsang.
According to the FIR, at least two tourist taxi drivers, who are part of a recognised tourist taxi association in Meghalaya, were approached by the HNYM members and forced to pay money. The drivers later lodged a formal complaint at Nongpoh Police Station, following which police acted on evidence gathered and apprehended the accused.

The FIR further alleged that the group demanded amounts ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹6,500 from each tourist taxi transporting passengers from outside the state.
Police have produced the five accused before the District Court today for necessary legal proceedings in connection with the extortion charges.
