Shillong, June 8: Congress legislator from Gambegre, Saleng A. Sangma, has been appointed as the new Opposition Chief Whip in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
A notification by Dr Andrew Simons, Commissioner & Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, dated June 8, 2023, stated: “It is hereby notified for general information that Shri. Saleng A Sangma, a member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, has been recognized by the Hon’ble Speaker as the Opposition Chief Whip in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly with effect from forenoon of 8th June, 2023.”
Congress is the principal opposition party in the State.
As per rules, only the principal opposition party can have the post of Leader of Opposition and opposition chief whip.
