SC lets UGC weigh in on CMJ University review

Must read

Shillong, Aug 25: The Supreme Court has issued notice on a review petition filed by CMJ Foundation and others in the CMJ University matter, limiting the notice to two student-centric grounds and directing that the University Grants Commission (UGC) be heard in the case.

A Bench of Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha and Justice Sandeep Mehta passed the order on August 18, 2025, while allowing the petitioners’ request for an oral hearing of the review.

The review arises from the Court’s February 13, 2025 judgment that affirmed the Meghalaya government’s March 31, 2014 decision to dissolve CMJ University.

Observing that the UGC “must be heard before any decision is taken,” the Court impleaded the Commission as a party-respondent and directed that notice be issued to it.

The petitioners have been asked to serve a copy of the review on UGC’s standing counsel, with dasti service permitted.

The matter has been directed to be relisted after three weeks on 16.9.2025
