Shillong, Dec 10: As 2025 ends, BookMyShow, India’s leading entertainment destination unveils BookMyShowThrowback2025, a celebration of a year where entertainment moved beyond moments to become a movement.

This was the year India didn’t just consume entertainment, it chose it, embraced it and lived it with intention. From record-breaking movies to electrifying live spectacles, 2025 proved that for Indians, stepping out wasn’t impulsive, it was essential.

The report notes a decisive behavioural shift: stepping out for entertainment became as routine as deciding where to dine, with films, concerts, comedy and culture finding permanent space on weekly calendars.

This is an audience that seeks out experiences with purpose, tracks pop culture with precision and shows up because it wants global-scale storytelling and live moments here, in India and in person.

Cinema remained the country’s most beloved shared ritual.

Record-breaking blockbusters, regional triumphs and a powerful wave of re-releases drew audiences back for a second innings. Regional cinema soared, with Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Assamese, Odia, Bengali, Punjabi and Marathi stories winning hearts across the country.

Nostalgia became an event in itself: re-releases drew 58 lakh moviegoers to cinemas, with Hyderabad the undisputed re-release capital.

Interstellar became the year’s most dramatic comeback story – first selling out its February run before returning by public demand in March.

Bengaluru reaffirmed its status as India’s ultimate night-owl movie capital, leading the country in 12 AM-6 AM screenings for the second consecutive year, proving nightlife now includes the 70MM experience.

Cinema halls saw unforgettable milestones, the Dussehra weekend witnessed the highest footfall of 2025 with 6.8 million tickets sold, followed by the Independence Day weekend.

Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 became the biggest repeat-watch phenomenon with over 6 lakh fans returning for a second watch. Meanwhile, Coolie commanded the year’s strongest advance sales with 2.4 million tickets bought ahead of release. Single-screen cinema continued to thrive, exemplified by Hari Hara Veera Mallu-Part 1, with over 55% of its total sales coming from these theatres.

If cinema was the heart of India’s cultural rhythm, live entertainment was its roar.
2025 saw a powerful 17% growth in live entertainment consumption, with 34,086 events across the country turning evenings into memories and weekends into spectacles. The ‘concert economy’ became mainstream, with India firmly establishing itself on the global touring map.

State governments played a pivotal role in this momentum with BookMyShow, inking Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Assam Tourism, Telangana Tourism, Gujarat Tourism and Delhi Tourism to facilitate the entry of more national and international acts, strengthen infrastructure, drive skill development and uplift local ecosystems, further deepening each state’s readiness to host large-scale entertainment experiences. The message was clear: live entertainment no longer just exists alongside the economy, it fuels it.

Music tourism became a defining trend of the year. A remarkable 562,032 fans travelled to another city for concerts, bringing an economic windfall to hotels, transport, restaurants and local businesses nationwide. Premium live experiences saw nearly 2X growth in footfalls, with fans opting for VIP pits, elevated decks, premium lounges and immersive hospitality zones, a signal of a maturing, experience-led market.

Over 1.8 million fans attended events solo, a powerful testament to India’s growing confidence in independent experiences. India’s cultural boomtowns continued its rise as a powerhouse of live entertainment, with remarkable consumption growth led by cities like Vishakapatanam (409%), Vadodara (230%), Indore (214%), Shillong (213%), Rajkot (159%) and more, proving that entertainment today is truly pan-India.

Theatre (plays) enjoyed a resurgence as well, registering a 45% growth in consumption, buoyed by curious new audiences discovering the joy of live performance.

While India stepped out with intention, living rooms transformed into intimate global festivals.

An Indian epic, a Korean thriller and a European drama often sat side by side on the same watchlist, as viewers embraced stories unconstrained by geography or language, with BookMyShow Stream becoming the bridge to world cinema at home.

As BookMyShow looks back at 2025, one thing is clear – this wasn’t just entertainment consumed; it was entertainment lived. A year of memories made, journeys taken, cities discovered, screens lit, playlists sung, stories shared and moments cherished.
