Guwahati, Aug 5: In a major crackdown against quackery, a fake doctor who allegedly performed at least 50 caesarean sections and other gynaecological surgeries over the past decade at two private hospitals in Silchar has been arrested.
The accused, identified as Pulok Malakar, was nabbed on Sunday evening while conducting a caesarean section at a private hospital in Silchar. He was produced before a local court on Monday and remanded to five days of police custody.
Police said Malakar, a resident of Badrpurghat in Sribhumi district, had been masquerading as a qualified medical practitioner for years. Verification of his credentials revealed that all his certificates were fake. A case has been registered under Silchar PS Case No. 786/25 with multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“After verification of his documents, we found that all his certificates were fake. He had been running this racket for many years,” Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta said.
Malakar is the 50th fake doctor to be caught in Assam under the anti-quackery initiative led by Dr. Abhijit Neog, now vigilance officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration.
