Govt orders NHIDCL to install signage on Pynursla road after vehicle plunges into gorge, killing 5

Shillong, Aug 5: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong has directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and a construction company for proper placement of signages in vulnerable areas along the stretch of the road to Pynursla.

Tynsong has reviewed the safety of the road folloiwng the traggic accident that killed five people on Sunday night when their vehicle went off road and plunged into a deep gorge at Rngaiñ.

Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, the deputy chief minister said that the accident may have occurred due to the driver’s attempt to overtake a truck in a foggy area.

According to him, the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Tynsong informed that a meeting with the construction company and NHIDCL to discuss road safety measures.

“My meeting today with the concerned construction company and NHIDCL is that make sure that the signages have to be properly placed in such vulnerable places wherever we feel that it is needed,” he said.

He added that the Chief Engineer of PWD (National Highway) is also scheduled to inspect vulnerable places and ensure proper display of signages.

Asked if any exgratia payment will be released to the next of kins of the victims, Tynsong said that the investigation into the case is ongoing and he has asked the SDO Civil to submit a report, which will determine the next course of action regarding compensation.

“See for compensation, I can’t say anything right now because as of now, I have asked the SDO Civil to submit a report. So let the report come out because as I said still you can’t say that it is the fault of the driver or the fault of the construction company,”he said adding “I express my grief and condolences to the bereaved family. Almost the whole family have been killed in this incident. Therefore, I request…let us wait till the report is given to us and we will see what is to be done.”

Tynsong stressed that road safety is a priority and that measures are being taken to prevent such accidents in the future.

On FIRs filed in regarding the incidents that had happened at Rngain area in the past, the deputy chief minister however said, “In fact, you can’t compare the past and the incident that has happened last night.”

“As I said to you accident is accident. Whether while construction of the road or even after completion of the road, you need to understand this is purely accident because nobody would like to kill themselves, I think we understand that very clearly so therefore as I said I am still waiting for the detailed report from the SDO Civil and SDPO then we will accordingly see what is to be done,”he stated further.
