Guwahati, Oct 14: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has sealed a packaged drinking water factory as part of its ongoing probe into the death of Assam’s legendary singer and actor, Zubeen Garg.
The factory, Mahavir Aqua, located at the Chaygaon Industrial Development Centre, was acquired about a year ago by Siddharth Sharma, who managed Zubeen Garg’s professional affairs. The unit has reportedly remained non-operational since its purchase and did not display any nameplate at the time of the raid.
The SIT conducted an extensive eight-hour search operation at the facility before sealing it. Sharma, who has been detained by police, is now facing serious non-bailable charges, including criminal conspiracy, murder, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Zubeen Garg, 52, one of the most influential figures in Assamese music and cinema, died on September 19 in what was initially reported as a swimming accident in Singapore. However, new findings have prompted deeper scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Investigators have reportedly detected cash transactions exceeding ₹1 crore in the bank accounts of two of Zubeen’s security personnel. This discovery has become a crucial part of the ongoing inquiry.
Earlier, on October 1, the SIT arrested Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, who had coordinated the Singapore event where Zubeen last performed. Both have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
In addition to Mahanta and Sharma, the SIT has also taken into custody drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta. The team continues to interrogate and record statements from multiple individuals connected to the case as the investigation widens.
