Sohiong Election: Voter turnout at 91.87% till 6 PM, liquor worth Rs 4 Lakh seized

Shillong, May 10: Meghalaya CEO, FR Kharkongor, informed that the excise department made one of the biggest seizures on Wednesday during the polling for the Sohiong constituency.

He also informed that the total voter turnout as of 6 PM was 91.87%, which is much higher than the previous polling percentage which was at 90.46%

They seized 1450.70 litres of liquor at around 2 PM, which in terms of monetary value is Rs 4 lakhs.

The liquor were Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) of different brands. The seizure was made by Excise Department from Mawkohtep village under Sohiong Constituency.

Polling started at 7 AM and was scheduled to conclude at 4 PM, but the polling was underway till the filing of this report. 34,783 voters, of which 17,096 are males and 17,687 are females, were eligible to cast their vote in 63 polling stations, to elect their new representative.

Election in Sohiong was adjourned after the sudden demise of former home minister and candidate of UDP, HDR Lyngdoh, on February 20. Assembly elections were held in rest of the state on February 27 to elect representatives for 59 constituencies.

Five companies of CAPF were deployed for the Sohiong poll. All women flying squads were also activated in the constituency for the first time besides all women polling station and youth managed polling stations.

As part of a unique initiative, voters at the model polling station at Nongpathaw planted tree saplings after casting their vote.
