South West Garo Hills observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities in efforts to empower PwDs

Ampati, Dec 4: In their efforts to empower persons with disabilities, South West Garo Hills commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) at the Multi Facility Centre, Ampati on Monday.

Organized by the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, Ampati, the theme of the event was “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” which witnessed the participation of distinguished guests, resource persons, and also PWDs and their attendants from across the district.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Rezina Marak, ADC, South West Garo Hills, graced the occasion, emphasizing the importance of unity in striving for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for individuals with disabilities. Expressing enthusiasm, Dr. Marak also encouraged persons with disabilities to unite for sustainable development, emphasizing the significance of understanding their rights and available schemes. She highlighted the Aadhaar card as a crucial document for accessing central schemes and pointed out job reservations in various departments for PWDs.

Resource persons, Dr. Noreen Sangma, District Immunization Officer, shed light on health rights, while Advocate A Hussain, District Legal Services Authority, addressed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Prior to the formal program, games and sports were conducted, and winners were acknowledged during the event. The remarkable contributions of individuals with disabilities were recognized, with Polgen Sangma acknowledged for his talent in singing and dedication to working with Bethany Society. Lion Blum Dimseng Momin received appreciation for initiating the production of bio-degradable disposable eco-friendly plates from Areca Nut leaves, contributing to environmental sustainability and generating employment.

Free health check up for PWDs was also organised during the event. The program concluded with the distribution of gifts to all attendees, creating a memorable and inclusive celebration.
