Shillong, Nov 29: In a tragic incident on Tuesday night, a person lost his life after a truck fell into a gorge at Shangbangla in Ri Bhoi District.
The deceased, whose name is yet to be identified, was the truck helper.
According to available information, the truck, bearing registration number WB-91-8529, was enroute from Shillong to Guwahati, transporting clinker. Reportedly, the vehicle was moving at a high speed but upon reaching a sharp turn at Shangbangla, at around 10 PM, the driver lost control, causing the truck to hit three shops and eventually plunge into the gorge.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the shopkeepers, but the property damage incurred was substantial.
Local residents swiftly alerted the police and officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to rescue the truck’s driver. Tragically, they discovered that the helper had succumbed to the injuries. The helper’s body was recovered on Wednesday morning, while the injured driver was transferred to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for treatment.
Efforts by the police and NHAI officials are ongoing to retrieve the truck from the gorge.
It is worth mentioning that the highway road at Shangbangla has sharp curves and the speeding vehicles pose a significant risk to the residents living there and operating shops along the roadside. Many incidents of road mishap have been reported in the particular area.
