Shillong, Feb 13: The 4th semester students of St. Anthony’s College Shillong is opposing the introduction of uniform. Hundreds of students from the college today staged the protest in the campus. As a mark of protest close to 400 students undertook signature campaign to oppose the decision of the college.
NEHU Students Union also took part in the protest.
The college is set to introduce uniforms from the new academic session 2024-25.
Speaking to reporters, a student expressed concern that it would be difficult for 4th-semester students to afford uniforms costing around ₹ 5000, especially considering they would only need to wear them for a year before graduating.
The 4th-semester students of St. Anthony’s College during the protest have unanimously decided not to wear the College uniform. Their classes will resume from the next week.
The students union called on the Principal, Rev. Br. Dr. Albert Dkhar and apprise him of the matter. However, the principal did not give any commitment and had stated that the matter needs to be discussed with the Salesian Brothers.
The students union demanded that the college should mention in its prospectus, on the requirement to wear uniform.
In December 2023, the St. Anthony’s College administration had announced that uniforms will be compulsory for all students except for the present batch of 5th semester. They had also stated that final year student can wear the uniform if they wished to.
