Itanagar, Aug 5: At the Government Upper Primary School in Anelih, Dibang Valley, Saturdays are anything but ordinary. Instead of putting aside their studies for leisure, young students are immersing themselves in the centuries-old Mishmi art of weaving, reconnecting with their cultural roots through fabric and thread.
Sharing the initiative on X, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said, “At the Govt. Upper Primary School in Anelih, Dibang Valley, #BaglessSaturdays aren’t just about taking a break from books, they’re about reconnecting with roots. Here, young students are learning the Mishmi art of weaving, a tradition passed down through generations, and they’re also being taught to speak and cherish their local language. They’re not just weaving fabric. They’re weaving identity.”

The Idu-Mishmi tribe, indigenous to the Dibang Valley, is renowned for its rich weaving tradition. Using backstrap looms, known locally as Tatkar, the community produces textiles that received Geographical Indication (GI) accreditation in 2019. Each component of the loom has a distinct name — Sley for warp, Raas for weft, Mora for spindle, and Jatal for spinning wheel.
Before weaving begins, colorful threads are carefully entwined with a hand-operated mixer, setting the stage for intricate geometric motifs such as triangles, rhomboids, and continuous lines that hold deep cultural meaning.
Mishmi textiles, known for their vibrant hues, elaborate patterns, and striking designs, are among the most celebrated in Arunachal Pradesh, embodying the identity, traditions, and spirit of the Idu-Mishmi community.
