Guwahati, May 20: The Assam government has halted a survey linked to a proposed satellite township near the upcoming semiconductor plant in Morigaon following protests by Tiwa and Bodo tribal organisations.
While local residents welcomed the Tata Group’s ₹27,000-crore semiconductor project at the site of the former Hindustan Paper Corporation mill in Jagiroad, tribal groups objected to the proposed township plan, fearing displacement and loss of land.
The semiconductor facility is expected to produce up to 48 million chips per day.
Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari, in an order issued on Monday (May 18), stated that the ongoing survey work related to “rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R)” had been cancelled with immediate effect after several organisations opposed the proposed satellite township.
District authorities had been conducting surveys in Sindhisar and Naladhara villages near Jagiroad to prepare an R&R proposal for the planned township. Residents of these villages, located within the Gobha Tribal Belt, protested the exercise over fears of eviction.
Several organisations, including the All Tiwa Students’ Union, recently staged protest rallies demanding that the township proposal be scrapped.
