Justice (retd) BP Katakey, who is heading the committee appointed by the Meghalaya High Court, on Monday sought clarification on the report of the aerial survey conducted within one kilometer radius of the coal dumps found in four districts of East Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills.
Assam and Meghalaya share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, yet their coal-driven economies have placed them on diverging paths. Meghalaya’s vast coal reserves powered Assam’s industries for decades, fuelling its brick kilns, tea estates, and cement factories. But while Assam thrived on this supply, the extraction process left Meghalaya with devastated landscapes, poisoned rivers, and a mounting human toll. The consequences of unregulated mining were borne by one state, while the benefits largely accrued to the other.
After over a decade, coal mining has resumed in Meghalaya, this time scientifically. Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, inaugurated the state’s first scientific coal mine at Saryngkham-A Coal Mine, Byndihati, East Jaintia Hills on Monday.
Justice (retired) BP Katakey-led committee has recommended the need for conducting proper drone surveillance in all the districts for the purpose of effectively checking illegal coal mining activities in the state.
