The Meghalaya government has launched a public outreach drive to trace and authenticate the descendants of members of the Garo Labour Corps, who served overseas during World War I (1917–1918) as part of India’s contribution to the British war effort.
On every July 16, the Garo Hills remember a remarkable yet often overlooked chapter of history—the Garo Labour Corps, whose contributions during World War I echoed far beyond their homeland in northeastern India. The occasion, known as Garo Labour Corps Day, commemorates July 16, 1918, when a small band of survivors returned home from France.
"Because We Did Not Choose", a documentary by Wanphrang Diengdoh, was hosted at the District Auditorium in Tura on Saturday. The event, organized by the Joint NGOs Forum, Mother's Union and Senior Citizens brought to light the largely forgotten contributions of indigenous communities from Northeast India, especially Meghalaya, to the First World War.

The public screening of the critically acclaimed documentary film titled “Because We Did Not Choose” directed by Wanphrang D. Diengdoh will be held at the Tura District Auditorium on May 24.
In a significant step toward preserving and honouring the contributions of the Garo Labour Corps during World War I, Cabinet Minister and Chairman of the Committee for the Preservation of Garo Culture and Heritage, Marcuise N. Marak, announced that the government has finalised plans to construct a memorial structure at Tura.
