Amidst the colourful threads of tradition and the rhythmic clatter of looms, the 9th National Handloom Day was celebrated with unparalleled enthusiasm at the serene campus of Sericulture & Weaving, Garobadha in South West Garo Hills on Monday. The event saw the heartwarming felicitation of weavers who have gracefully crossed the age of 70, alongside the joyful distribution of a vibrant array of yarns to the talented artisans.
Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Monday sought the intervention of the Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani for setting up of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres in over 1500 villages in Meghalaya.
The Minister also informed that the newly launched Innova vehicles initiated by the government are exclusively meant for ferrying tourists and will help to bring down the number of cars coming from Assam.
Lyngdoh told reporters that the state Assembly had adopted a resolution recommending very strongly for inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
In order to give a further boost to the tourism sector, Lyngdoh also announced the government’s decision to bring some of the major projects which include Orchid Lake Resort, Polo Orchid Shillong under the joint venture mode and said there will be signing of agreement between the government and private players based on their expertise in hospitality and tourism.
