Itanagar, July 15: After an extensive tour of flood and landslide-hit areas in Leparada constituency, MLA Nyabi Jini Dirchi has urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to release immediate funds for large-scale restoration and rehabilitation work.
The June 28 cloudburst, followed by days of torrential rain, left a trail of devastation across Leparada district, with flash floods and landslides destroying roads, bridges, farmlands and public infrastructure.
“The streams and rivers swelled into raging torrents, washing away paddy fields, fruit-laden orange orchards, trees, mithuns and even houses. Roads and bridges collapsed, cutting off several villages in my constituency,” Dirchi told reporters.
Describing the scale of destruction as unprecedented, the MLA appealed for the early release of funds to restore roads, bridges, electricity, drinking water supply and other essential public infrastructure on a war footing.
Leparada Zila Parishad Chairman Nyamar Riba also highlighted the gravity of the situation and sought urgent government assistance for displaced families.
“The destruction is severe and affected families need immediate support for rehabilitation. A Karnataka-based NGO has joined relief efforts, and with the district administration, the situation is gradually improving,” officials said.
In the worst-hit Dari Circle, where vast stretches of paddy fields have either been washed away or buried under silt, sand and boulders, Circle Officer Dr. Nyato Daji said government departments have already begun restoring drinking water supply, electricity, roads and bridges.
“The next priority is to rehabilitate farmers and help restore their livelihoods,” he said.
