Dibrugarh, Oct 8: Thousands of members of the Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) and the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) took to the streets in Tinsukia on Tuesday, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, land ownership rights, and a hike in daily wages for tea garden workers.
The protest, held at Thana Chariali under Tinsukia Police Station, coincided with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to the town for an official programme. The demonstrators blocked roads and shouted slogans accusing the government of failing to fulfil its long-standing promises to the community.
Protesters alleged that despite repeated assurances, the government has not acted on its commitment to grant ST status to the tea tribes and five other indigenous groups of Assam. They also demanded a substantial increase in the minimum daily wage, saying the current rate is inadequate to sustain basic living needs.
Following the rally, leaders of ATTSA and AASAA submitted a memorandum to Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his direct intervention to expedite the process of granting ST status and ensuring land rights for members of the tea community.
