Harmapreet and company is facing sharp criticism after their loss against England on October 19 Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. This has been third straight loss for the women in blue in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, first against South Africa by 3 wickets, then Australia by 3 wickets and England by 4 runs. There have been mixed reactions coming in from former cricketers.

This writer had an exclusive conversation with Ms Gargi Banerjee, former international cricketer. Ms Banerjee came up with lots of in-depth analysis on what the team management needs to focus now.
Q: Team India is facing real test now, where do you think the team lost the match against England?
Gargi Banerjee: The team management has not made the right decision on playing XI. Jemima Rodrigues would have given chance in place of Harleen Deol. Harleen’s batting consistency is not seen in the domestic as well as international circuit. In place of Amanjit we should have gone with Radha Jadhav who is more experienced and in events like World Cup experience do matters.Poor application of shot selection made India lose the match by the seniors. Medium pace attack is not up to the mark even while bowling no planning was seen.
Q: Do you believe at this stage of the game Coach Amol Majumdar and Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur needs to lead the team from the front?
Gargi Baneerjee: It is not just the coach or the skipper every individual especially all the senior players should take the responsibility whether bowling or batting except Kranti Gaud and Charini both are new in this arena but the other nine players having vast experienced but unable to apply the skills on the right time.
Q: Four teams one spot, how India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand can qualify for the Semi Final. Are you hopeful of India making it to the Semi Final?
Gargi Banerjee: Surely India should qualify for the Semi Finals. India now has to win against New Zealand on Thursday (23rd October) followed by their final group match against Bangladesh on October 26. India I am sure will learn from their mistakes done in the last three matches.
Q: Smriti Mandhana during the post-match presser said that “I will take it on Me”, your reaction to that?
Gargi Baneerjee: Well, in cricket every senior player is responsible for winning or loosing because it is a team game. Why only Smriti when there was 125 runs partnership between Harmanpreet and Smrity? Harman shouldn’t have played that shot, then Smriti, then Dipti then Richa, so whom to blame? The mindset and execution need to be improved. Yes, the entire team should cheer up to win the semis first and then the final.
