Dibrugarh, Nov 12: A tense situation has gripped Rupai tea estate under Baghjan Police Station in Assam’s Tinsukia district after a woman was killed and another critically injured in a violent attack on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sheela Nanda (48) of 14 No. Line, Rupai tea estate. Her daughter-in-law, Rashmi Karmakar (25), sustained grievous injuries and is undergoing treatment in Dibrugarh.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a local man, identified as Narottam Bhumij, allegedly barged into Sheela’s house and attacked both women with a sharp weapon following a heated altercation. Sheela succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Following the incident, enraged locals went on a rampage, setting several houses and shops ablaze and vandalising an e-rickshaw while demanding that the accused be handed over to them. Police, however, managed to arrest the accused before the mob could get to him.

“The situation became uncontrollable for some time, but police intervention prevented further escalation,” said a local resident of Rupai tea estate.

Sources said Rashmi had been actively involved with a women’s organisation and had been organising awareness meetings in the tea estate to curb anti-social activities. Her initiatives had reportedly angered some local elements.

“Rashmi has been leading awareness programmes against anti-social activities in the tea garden areas, which made her a target,” said the line chowkidar of Rupai tea estate.

Police have arrested the main accused, and an investigation is underway. The situation in the area remains tense.
