Guwahati, Nov 12: Assam Police have arrested a man for allegedly raping and impregnating his minor daughter in Cachar district, nearly three years after the crime was committed.
According to police, the incident took place in 2022 in the Udharbond area of Cachar. The survivor, now 16 years old, gave birth to a baby girl and later approached the Child Helpline, which helped her file a complaint nearly two years after the assault.
“After receiving the complaint in January this year, we registered a case and launched an investigation. The accused had been absconding for the past 11 months before being apprehended on Monday night,” said Siimsing Timung, officer-in-charge of Udharbond Police Station.
Police said the case was initially registered at Rangirkhari Police Outpost in Silchar, about 18 km from the site of the incident, before being transferred to Udharbond Police Station for further investigation.
Based on the complaint and initial findings, a case was registered under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 — which deals with aggravated penetrative sexual assault — and Section 376(3) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which carries a punishment of 20 years to life imprisonment for raping a girl below 16 years of age.
“The accused had been on the run, but we kept him under constant surveillance. The charge sheet was filed within the mandatory time frame, and sufficient evidence was gathered during the investigation,” another police official said.
The accused was produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody. “We are continuing the investigation, and interrogation of the accused will be crucial,” the official added.
According to the FIR filed on January 18 this year, the survivor alleged that her father had repeatedly raped her at home and threatened to kill her younger brother if she revealed the crime to anyone.
