Third West Garo Hills District Badminton Championship-2025 concludes successfully

Tura, Aug 11: The third West Garo Hills District Badminton Championship 2025 concluded successfully at the Indoor Sports Hall in Hawakhana, Tura on Sunday.

Altogether 150 young badminton players participated in the three-day tournament.

Enthusiastic participation was seen in categories ranging from U-11 to U-19 for both singles and doubles, as well as senior men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and the open mixed doubles.

The champions crowned on the final day of intense competition are as follows:

Girls U-13 Singles: Winner: Amelia D. Marak, Runner up: Athena D. Marak

Boys U-13 Singles: Winner: Jiyone Hajong, Runner up: Krishiv Agarwal

Girls U-19 Singles: Winner: Eladah Gasa G. Momin, Runner up: Rashmi Boro

Girls U-11 Singles: Winner: Chumiwon Momin, Runner up: Norah R. Marak

Boys U-15 Singles: Winner: Dezio P. Marak, Runner up: Elmo Aaizo D. Marak

Following their strong performance, a select group of players was chosen to represent the West Garo Hills District at the upcoming 40th Meghalaya State Badminton Championships 2025. The selection was based on their skills and performance throughout the tournament.

In a special recognition of their talent and potential, Chumiwon Momin and Euorie Chean R Marak were awarded the Most Promising Player of the Tournament.

The medal and certificate distribution ceremony was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Randa Sangma, SDPO, Dadenggre; C.R. Marak, Senior Badminton Player of West Garo Hills; P.M. Sangma, Retired IAS Officer and Advisor of WGHDBA; and Billykid A. Sangma, who presented the awards to the deserving young athletes.

The event also took the opportunity to offer a moment of silence in memory of now late Mathew Ch Momin, also affectionately known as “Chichi,” who passed away at the age of 59 early Sunday morning at Tura Civil Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer.

Momin was a trailblazing martial artist who brought Taekwondo to prominence in the region, transforming it into a beloved sport for the youth.

The event also served as an initial talent identification for the 39th National Games in 2027. The West Garo Hills District Badminton Association successfully organized the event, providing a platform for young athletes to compete and develop their badminton skills. The championship highlighted the growing talent and enthusiasm for badminton in the region.
