Thunderstorms, hail likely in East Khasi Hills till March 19

Shillong, March 15: The district administration of East Khasi Hills District has issued a public advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall expected over the next several days following a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the advisory released by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Shillong, adverse weather conditions are likely between March 15 and March 19 across parts of the district.

The forecast indicates that March 15 may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, hail and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph at isolated locations.

On March 16, thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph along with heavy rainfall are expected in some areas.

For March 17, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall at isolated places, while March 18 and 19 are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety precautions during the period of unstable weather.

The advisory asks citizens to secure loose materials such as tin sheets, bricks, signboards and other objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

Residents have also been advised to switch off electrical appliances during lightning and avoid standing near electric poles or power lines.

People living near rivers and streams have been cautioned about the possibility of flash floods during intense rainfall. The administration has urged the public not to enter or cross flowing water, drains, culverts, rivers or waterfalls, warning that even shallow fast-moving water can be dangerous.

Motorists have also been advised not to drive through flooded areas, while residents have been asked to avoid venturing out during hailstorms.

The district disaster management authorities have requested citizens to remain vigilant and follow official updates. In case of emergencies related to weather or disasters, the public can seek assistance by dialling 112.

The advisory was issued by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), urging residents across Meghalaya to take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the forecast period.
