Agartala, July 5: Alliance partner Tipra Motha has issued an ultimatum to the BJP-led Tripura government, threatening to withdraw support unless the Tiprasa Accord and measures to curb illegal infiltration from Bangladesh are promptly implemented.
MLA Ranjit Debbarma announced that the party’s top leaders—including supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and MP Kriti Devi Debbarma—will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi by July 20 to demand action.
The Tiprasa Accord, signed in March 2023, guarantees indigenous rights, direct tribal council funding, and constitutional safeguards. But Tipra Motha accuses the government of inaction in the assembly—“What is the benefit in being part of government?” Debbarma asked.
He added that after more than a year, no legislative progress has been made.
Highlighting the gravity, Debbarma revealed that Kriti Devi Debbarma—who ran the Tripura East seat as a BJP-Motha joint candidate—has “given her consent to resign” if no progress is seen. Her departure would send a strong political signal.
The party is also intensifying pressure over “unchecked infiltration.” Despite an MHA alert on May 19 for stricter border surveillance, Tipra Motha says illegal settlements persist, displacing indigenous communities. Numerous representations to district and state authorities have, they allege, fallen on deaf ears.
With a tight July 20 deadline post-Delhi discussions, Tipra Motha has cautioned it will “walk away from power rather than betray their people.” Currently, BJP holds 32 seats, Tipra Motha 13, IPFT 1, CPI(M) 11, and Congress 3 in the 60‑member House.
