Tourist visa services resume, boosting India–Bangladesh travel ties

Must read

Agartala, Feb. 23: After a two-month suspension, cross-border travel between India and Bangladesh is set for a strong revival as Dhaka resumes tourist visa processing from February 24, 2026, across its missions in New Delhi, Agartala and Siliguri.

The suspension had disrupted winter vacations, business engagements and medical travel, leaving thousands of prospective travellers in limbo.

According to officials, the restoration of tourist visas for Indian nationals signals an important diplomatic thaw after tensions led to the halt in late December 2025.

With many travellers having postponed visits to Dhaka’s historic quarters, Cox’s Bazar’s expansive coastline and Sylhet’s renowned tea estates, the reopening reflects renewed confidence in cross-border movement and bilateral engagement.

Visa services have also officially resumed at the Bangladesh High Commission in Agartala following an 18-month suspension. The halt had been in place since the formation of an interim government in Bangladesh.

With a newly elected government now in office, the recommencement of visa processing has brought relief to applicants and is expected to strengthen tourism, trade and people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Agartala residents Arindam Saha and Jushna Begam welcomed the reopening of visa services, expressing relief and excitement. “We applied as soon as we heard the news,” they said, eager to travel to Bangladesh after months of uncertainty.
