Training program on sign language held

Tura, Mar 23: A training on sign language was held at Williamnagar, district headquarters for East Garo Hills. 45 master trainers from East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills, attended the program to know about the sign language to assist voters for the upcoming elections.

Barefoot trust initiated the training program for all the districts in Meghalaya. A Sangma (MCS), ADC (Elections), addressing the participants emphasized on the importance of equality for all voters and appreciated the efforts of the team in conducting the training.

Sweet Syiemiong, Program Coordinator, imparted the training and highlighted the ways to interact with persons with visual or hearing impairments, including using Braille and sign language.

Speaking to hub news Sweety Syiemiong said, that “the training covered essential topics on sign language, accessible facilities at polling stations, braille signage and effective methods to assist persons with disabilities during the voting process”.

She further added that “the training ensured that poll volunteers have the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with voters across the disability spectrum, upholding their right to participate in the democratic process.”
