Tura, August 1: The District NCD (Non-Communicable Diseases) Clinic in collaboration with the District Health Society of West Garo Hills, Tura, organized a one-day Cancer Screening Programme aimed at early detection and improved outcomes for individuals aged 30 years and above, at the Tura Civil Hospital on Friday.
This vital health ininitiative stresses the importance of early cancer detection for effective treatment and full recovery. Organizers emphasize that identifying cancer in its initial stages significantly increases the chances of a successful cure. Around 10 doctors were involved in the screening process, ensuring a broad range of early detection.
The program employed a comprehensive strategy for early cancer detection, utilizing several key methods. These included thorough clinical examinations to identify any unusual swellings or growths, and detailed oral examinations to look for early signs such as ulcers or swelling within the mouth, potential indicators of oral cancer. Clinical breast examinations were conducted to specifically screen for the presence of lumps, a common early sign of breast cancer.
Sonography provided valuable internal imaging capabilities, while Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) was utilized as an effective method for screening for cervical cancer by observing any abnormal cellular changes. Additionally, blood examinations were also carried out to gather further diagnostic information.
These varied approaches allowed the medical team to look for critical early detection signs across different types of cancer, such as the identification of lumps in the breast, the observation of unusual growth in the cervix, and the detection of ulcers or swelling indicative of oral cancer.
Primarily focusing on oral screening, the camp provided an avenue for patients showing potential signs of cancer. If such indications were found, the Tura Civil Hospital is equipped to carry out chemotherapy and basic surgeries. However, cases demanding radiation therapy were to be referred to Shillong for specialised treatment.
