Tura observes World Malaria Day with music, drama and awareness

Tura, April 25: The Tura Super Market was filled with melodious tunes on Thursday as World Malaria Day was marked with theatrical drama performance. The program was a collaborative effort of MGMP & Nokpante Production and the District Malaria Office.

With the theme for World Malaria Day 2024 being “Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world” , it focused on the attempts to eliminate the disease completely and to educate and inform people to prevent it.

Dr. Bichitrani Ch Marak, District Malaria Officer, along with her office members, was present for the program , addressing the gathering she emphasized awareness about the disease and gave insights on the preventive measures. She also stressed on the usage of mosquito nets while sleeping and to be mindful of any stagnant water in and around the surroundings as even a small portion of stagnant water is adequate for mosquitoes to breed, she further stated.

The program saw musical performance by Rise & Shine and Chegim Durama, a streetdance number was also performed by Scandal group. There also was an act performed by the Achik Theatre Group, which portrayed an awareness story on malaria and the pros and cons about it.

World Malaria day is celebrated every year across the world to spread the word about the disease, its symptoms, and precautions. Malaria is a vector borne disease and is highly prevalent in tropical countries due to rainy and humid weather. The disease is caused by mosquito bites. One of the most common symptoms of malaria is fever with shaking chills. Even though the disease is very common, proper hygiene and sanitation can prevent the spread of the disease.

Garo hills district is Malaria prone and the government has initiated a mission to eradicate malaria by 2027.
