Tura, July 7: Tura is all set to have its first electric crematorium, marking a major step toward cleaner and safer last rites.
The facility is designed to significantly reduce harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter typically released by traditional open-air pyres,
The foundation stone for Tura’s first Electric-Hybrid Crematorium was laid today at Mokshadham, the Hindu Samshan Bhumi. The project, estimated at ₹5 crore, is being implemented by the Department of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
Designed to phase out traditional wood-based cremation, the facility will use a combination of LPG and electricity, offering a cleaner and more eco-friendly alternative. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce emissions, environmental degradation, and health hazards associated with open pyre cremations.
The foundation-laying ceremony, steeped in traditional rituals, was led by Prabin Panthi, President of the Tura Hindu Samshan Bhumi Committee (THSBC), in the presence of committee members and local community leaders. In his address, Panthi expressed deep gratitude to the state government and stakeholders, urging the timely completion of the project for the benefit of the community.
The new crematorium is envisioned to blend dignity, efficiency, and environmental responsibility while preserving cultural customs. It marks another milestone in the THSBC’s ongoing mission to modernize and improve Mokshadham.
The THSBC has introduced multiple reforms, including the completion of the Shashan Kali Mandir, the establishment of a single-window cremation logistics system, and the commissioning of an earlier eco-friendly cremation unit. There is also perimeter lighting, piped water supply, a night-time caretaker, and strengthened land documentation and protection measures.
