Dibrugarh, Mar 6: Two associates of a radical sikh leader who were serving jail terms in an Assam prison have been admitted in hospital after falling ill.

Kulwant Singh and Gurmeet Singh, both close associates of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh Sandhu were admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital Dibrugarh on Tuesday night at around 10 PM due to health issues. Kulwant Singh was apparantly taken ill due to epilepsy.

According to the hospital superintendent the health condition of the duo is not life threatening.

There are nine associates of the sikh leader currently lodged in Dibrugarh central jail after having been booked under the National Security Act.

Their leader Amritpal Singh Sandhu who was on the run was nabbed from Moga district of Punjab and brought to Dibrugarh cebtral jail on April 23rd of last year. He has been booked under the NSA.

Amritpal is a radical pro-Khalistan separatist, and a self styled Sikh preacher. After living in Dubai for several years he returned to Punjab in September 2022 and was controversially anointed as leader of “Waris Punjab De”, which means “Heirs of Punjab”.

He started a campaign against the drug menace in his state and began adopting a traditional form of Sikhism.

But it was after he began advocating a sovereign Sikh state called Khalistan that authorities suddenly sat up and took notice.

He was accused by Indian intelligence agencies of getting support from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and stockpiling weapons while raising a private militia called Anandpur Khalsa Fauj of AKF.

The state government in Punjab, acting in coordination with the central government, launched an intense crackdown on the group leading to his arrest on various charges including attempted murder.
