Shillong, May 29: Meghalaya police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Assam in connection with two separate cases of sexual assault on schoolgirls in Shillong.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, the investigation began after a video went viral on May 24, 2025, showing a masked man sexually assaulting a schoolgirl. The video depicted the accused lifting the girl’s uniform and taking photographs with a mobile phone.
A special team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) Ivan B. Diengdoh, was formed on May 26 to identify and apprehend the culprit. The incident was traced to a lane near the YWCA in Umsohsun and had occurred on May 23 at around 6:35 a.m. The victim was located and examined, and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Lumdiengjri Police Station under Case No. 55(05)2025. Charges were filed under Sections 76 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 11 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
SP Syiem also revealed that a similar case had taken place on May 19, between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., on the steps near Dreamland in Police Bazar. Another schoolgirl was sexually assaulted in this incident. A separate FIR was lodged at Sadar Police Station under Case No. 140(05)2025, and the accused was charged under Sections 7 and 8 of the POCSO Act.
Due to the serious nature of both incidents, the cases were classified as Special Reports.
The accused was identified as Himan Gogoi from Jorhat, Assam. On May 28, a police team led by Woman Police Sub-Inspector Lavinia Kongwang travelled to Jorhat. With assistance from Lahdoigarh Outpost under Teok Police Station, the team raided a house in Bamkukurachua village, where the accused was hiding at a relative’s residence. The mobile phone used in the crimes, along with other incriminating evidence, was seized during the raid.
SP Syiem further stated that the accused is also linked to another case registered at Teok Police Station (Case No. 43(03)2025) under Sections 329(3) and 79 of the BNS.
Gogoi will be produced before the District Court in Jorhat. After securing transit remand, he will be brought to Shillong for further legal proceedings.
