Unions in Assam unite to observe May Divas, urge working class to fight for rights

Guwahati, May 1: May Day was observed in Assam on Wednesday along with the rest of the country with an appeal to the working class to unite and fight for their legitimate dues.

In Guwahati the occasion was observed with a public meeting at the Panbazar Meghdoot Bhawan followed by a protest procession. Different trade unions including CITU, AIUTC, AICTU, AIUTUC, UTUC, HMS, unions of State and Central government employees, bank and insurance employees, railway employees, and other unions participated in the rally.

The unions of employees and workers -from the bank and insurance sector took to the streets to protest the “anti-working-class policies of the state and the central government”.

Labour unions members said that “today we have celebrated May Day together with all the departments, central and state employees and unions. The government has imposed anti-labour laws on our workers, we have raised our voice against the anti-labour laws.

International Labour Day, also known as May Day or Workers’ Day, is celebrated on May 1st. This annual observance honours the contributions and achievements of workers worldwide and promotes their rights and opportunities.

“May Day was celebrated since 1886 protesting the oppression of labourers and have been celebrating May Day every year by protesting against the government’s labour law”.
