USTM bids goodbye to guiding light Dr. D.D. Lapang

Must read

Ri Bhoi, Sept 13: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its guiding light and mentor, Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, who breathed his last on the night of September 12, 2025, at Bethany Hospital, Shillong, following a prolonged illness. He was 91.

In heartfelt remembrance, the entire USTM fraternity—comprising of 6000 administrative officials, deans, directors, principals, heads of departments, faculty, students, and staff—gathered at the Amenity Centre, under grey skies that reflected sorrow for the passing of the towering figure whose vision and leadership left an indelible mark on the institution’s journey.

Expressing his grief, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said, “Former CM DD Lapang’s invaluable support, wisdom, and unwavering encouragement have been instrumental in shaping the journey of USTM…It gives me immense satisfaction that we have dedicated an Amenity Centre in his name, and he himself inaugurated the building as Dr D D Lapang Block. This was his last visit to USTM!”

Vice Chancellor Prof. G.D. Sharma said: “He was the guiding force of USTM’s academic journey, whose inspiration will continue to shape our mission.”

USTM held floral tributes and prayers for him at the Amenity Centre. The Amenity Centre, Block F, was incidentally named Dr. D.D. Lapang Block, which he had inaugurated in his honour in July 2023! At that time, D.D. Lapang recalled the time when “This spot was a desolate wasteland, but now proudly stands as a thriving educational hub.” He had said to USTM, “I will forever stand by your side.”

As Chief Minister of Meghalaya, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in 2009—the first academic institution on what is today the thriving USTM campus. His leadership ushered in a period of remarkable growth in infrastructure, education, and socio-economic development across the region.

Widely regarded as the “Father of Ri-Bhoi District,” Dr. D.D. Lapang was not only a visionary statesman but a tireless advocate for justice and inclusive development. His life was one of integrity, humility, and service—a beacon of hope and strength for all.

Dr Lapang inaugurated the Amenity Centre of USTM which is named after the late chief minister of Meghalaya in 20th July, 2023.

A team of USTM along with students and senior faculty members have visited his Shillong Residence to offer tribute to the late statesman.

His legacy will forever remain a source of inspiration for the USTM community and beyond.
