Shillong, June 6: In a spirited drive to empower youth, the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) joined forces with Seng Samla & Cultural Sports Club Syadrit to host a career guidance and counselling program at Balawan College Hall, Umsning. The event, situated in the heart of the Umsning area, drew over 1,000 motivated students eager to explore academic and professional pathways.

The program, designed to illuminate the array of academic choices, career opportunities, skill development prospects, and scholarship options, drew notable dignitaries. The Chancellor of USTM, Mahbubul Hoque, led an engaging discussion on emerging career pathways, emphasising the commitment to bringing such initiatives to even the remotest regions.

Political leaders and local luminaries also graced the event. Dr. Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, MP from the Umsning Constituency, offered invaluable career guidance at a pivotal time in the students’ lives. Chief Guest Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA for Umsning, delivered a motivational address, urging the young attendees to seize the opportunities that lay ahead. Banrikus Nongstang, a District Council member with a storied entrepreneurial background, shared compelling lessons drawn from his journey.

The heart of the day’s proceedings was a series of resourceful sessions by USTM academicians. Prof. Amit Choudhury kicked off with his enlightening talk “What’s Next? – Choosing Courses in Higher Education,” offering students a framework to make informed decisions. Debasish Saha captivated listeners with a discussion on “The Role of Institutions in the Context of the NEP,” underscoring the transformative potential of current educational reforms. The session on “Training & Placement Division,” led by Nurmahmud Ali, deepened the dialogue on bridging academic pursuits with real-world employability.

The interactive format fostered an environment ripe for dialogue, as personal anecdotes, real-world examples, and a structured roadmap for career planning resonated with attendees. An open-floor Q&A session provided students with the opportunity to address their personal career concerns, enriching the overall discourse.

The event closed with a ceremony recognising the active participation of the students through the distribution of certificates. USTM reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing a generation of empowered youth who can lead with confidence into tomorrow.
