Guwahati, July 25: Blending tradition, biodiversity, and scientific innovation, Nayan Teron, an MSc Botany student in his fourth semester at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), has successfully developed an eco-friendly herbal shampoo using native plant species found on the university campus.

Under the guidance of Dr. Mautushi Das, Associate Professor in the Department of Botany, Teron’s research taps into the age-old wisdom of herbal remedies for hair care. The project began with a detailed survey of the herbaceous plant diversity across USTM’s varied ecological zones. Drawing from ethnobotanical knowledge and scientific literature, Nayan selected a range of plants known for their hair-nourishing, conditioning, and cleansing properties.

Using eco-conscious, scientifically validated processes, these selected herbs were transformed into a herbal shampoo formulation. The product underwent a comprehensive series of tests, including: pH evaluation, Solid content analysis, foaming index and foam stability, foam ability assessment and dirt dispersion efficiency.
The results showed the shampoo to have a balanced pH, strong foaming ability, effective cleansing action, and promising performance in reducing hair fall and dandruff. These qualities position it as a viable, natural alternative to conventional chemical-laden hair care products.

“This research not only underscores the therapeutic potential of indigenous plant species but also reflects USTM’s rich botanical diversity and its commitment to sustainable, nature-based innovations. It exemplifies how scientific research grounded in traditional knowledge can yield solutions for modern personal care, with both environmental and health benefits,” a statement from the university said.
