DC leads crackdown on infiltration risk
Tura , July 25: With eviction drives underway in Assam’s Paikan Reserve Forest, the West Garo Hills District Administration has intensified surveillance along the inter-state border to prevent illegal infiltration or settlement into Meghalaya.
Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal, is leading the district’s response under the direct instructions of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who on Thursday chaired a high-level virtual review with Deputy Commissioners of all border districts.
The meeting assessed the possible spillover effects of Assam’s evictions and issued clear directives for enhanced vigilance, ground-level coordination, and real-time action.
Speaking after the meeting, DC Agarwal said that all vulnerable zones are being closely monitored and preventive action is underway.
“Our top priority is to ensure that no illegal settlement takes place. Surveillance has been strengthened and we are maintaining close coordination with all stakeholders,” said West Garo Hills DC.
The district administration has already convened emergency meetings with BDOs, police officials, village council secretaries, and traditional heads in border areas. Village Defence Parties and local vigilance committees have been activated to maintain round-the-clock monitoring. Naka checking and random vehicle inspections are ongoing at key entry points, while regular police patrols are being carried out in unmanned and forested stretches.
Public awareness drives are also being held to sensitise villagers and encourage them to report any suspicious movement or unidentified persons attempting to cross or settle near the border. DC Agarwal stressed the importance of community cooperation in preventing unauthorised entry.
Although no illegal infiltration has been reported so far, the district remains on high alert. The administration has made it clear that any individual found entering illegally will either be prosecuted under local laws or handed over to Assam authorities, depending on the nature of the offence.
Further coordination between the DC’s office, the Superintendent of Police, and thana-level officials is ongoing to ensure swift and effective response to any emerging situation.
